Practicing English outside of school

Jul 16, 2020

In Ethiopia, when children transition to the seventh grade, all subjects are taught in English. To prepare them for this transition, students in primary school are taught the English language.  Practicing to speak English outside of school is therefore important but is difficult for many children.

In our Family Empowerment Program many of the parents did not go to school and thus cannot help their children in practicing to speak English at home. They also cannot afford the expense of hiring a language tutor.

Since learning a second language takes repetition and reinforcement, we work with all of the school-age children in our program to ensure their English speaking skills are where they need to be to achieve success in school.

Our newest AJ Girls have recently begun working with their tutor at home in the area of English language. Likewise, we will soon start working with the children in our FEP program to improve their English language skills. As our program in Ethiopia grows, we are also planning to establish an English language summer camp as part of our summer enrichment program.  #wysd2020 #wysd
