Zeleke Alemayehu, known to us as Fasil, serves as our Liaison and Logistics Officer In Ethiopia.
Cindy often refers to Fasil as her “right-hand man” in Ethiopia because he helps with so many aspects of our work in-country.
Recently, our team had the opportunity to sit down with him to ask him some questions that will help you to get to know him and learn why he is so passionate about the mission of AJ.
Would you be willing to share about your family?
I live with my mother, two sisters and my dad. I’m working hard to have a better life, and now I know I want to get married and have a family.
Can you tell us a bit about your background and what led you to work with Addis Jemari?
I came to AJ by meeting Cindy. She was looking for a driver, and one of my friends who knew her asked if I could fill in for a day, and next thing I know it’s been 7 years working together.
What does a typical day in your role at Addis Jemari look like? What do you love about working for Addis Jemari?
I have many tasks, and we all wear many hats. In my role of Logistics Officer, I have to do all the purchasing for both centers, as well as all the maintenance for both locations. If there is a problem I have to find the right person to fix the issue. I’m also helping as a translator. I also have tutored some small classes. I’m in every corner of our programs, and beyond just driving the van, it’s all under my responsibility.
What do you find most rewarding about working with AJ?
Little by little I can see how we are shaping the lives of children and their mothers in a positive way. It’s very, very rewarding, and it makes me extremely happy. It’s changing lives, for me, that’s what matters, and I strive to work the best I can to make a difference, no matter how long the days or nights are, my heart is full.
How do you see your role impacting the community and the individuals you work with?
I can’t think of anything that makes my job challenging because I always try to figure out a good solution. We can’t complain because we are growing, and the progress we are making is excellent. The most important thing is to continue scaling up our processes to execute our programs successfully.
Outside of work, what are some of your interests or hobbies?
I like chilling with my friends, playing ping pong and of course I love music. During Covid, I had a small keyboard and it was very nice to play it.
Are there any books/quotes/scriptures that inspire you in your leadership journey?
Better Together, I like this phrase because I am practically living it every day when I interact with the children. When I used to mentor the kids, it was our favorite phrase. I always let them know how I had challenging moments when I was a shoe cleaner, so even as a very extremely poor guy who could relate to them, I had no money, but me, my friends people around me, were more important than money, and with the support of everyone, you are always better together and eventually I was able to buy property and do better, the opportunity is always standing in front of you.
What is one thing you want our AJ Family to know about Ethiopia?
Ethiopia is a beautiful country of beautiful people rich in history, culture and beautiful spiritual background. It’s sad that nowadays, we are seen as a symbol of hunger, which should never be the case.
