Meet Nina : Education in Ethiopia

Apr 5, 2022

Education is one of the cornerstones of our programs in Ethiopia — providing the children we serve with the resources needed to help them experience a brighter future!

Our team in Ethiopia works every day to make education a priority for the girls in our AJ Home. We also support children in our Family Empowerment Program (FEP) to gain access to the tools they need for academic success.

Through these two programs, we make it a top priority to ensure that each child has the chance to receive a high-quality, formal education. We do this in three primary ways:
  • School supplies. We provide school supplies and school shoes so that children have all the essential resources to attend school consistently.
  • Educational support. We provide tutoring and library service at our Charlie’s Library and Tutoring Center (generously sponsored by Charlie’s Heart Foundation), and tutoring at the AJ Home. Along with tutoring, children whose parents are a part of FEP can read and study peacefully in the library as well.
  • Healthy meals. We provide food that is vital for children’s educational success. At AJ Home, we offer three meals a day for the girls — helping with their growth and development. Similarly, we provide FEP children with a healthy meal when they come to our FEP Center to study and use the library.
Academic progress reports for each of the children show that our efforts are truly making a difference in their lives.

One of the children impacted by these critical resources is 12-year-old Nina. She is a fourth-grader who shines in her character and academic achievement. The AJ staff regularly refer to her as a model student for other children who participate in tutoring and library services.

Math and science are Nina’s favorite subjects, and she is showing impressive progress in both. She doesn’t miss weekly tutoring sessions, and she also helps other children with their schoolwork. She is a very responsible child who loves to support her mother at home.

Nina is an excellent example of why education is essential to our model. Our primary goal in education intervention for children like her is to ensure that each child in our program succeeds academically.

Another indication of success is the national exams achievements of our students. In August 2021, each of the eighth graders we serve passed their nationally required end-of-year exams. This was made possible because people like you helped to provide them with the school supplies, after-school tutoring, and nutritious food they needed to help them succeed.

Would you consider becoming an education sponsor so we can impact the lives of even more children?

A monthly donation of $25/month will help impact children like Nina.
